Additional funding has now become available for the Scottish fishing industry via the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund (EMFF), Seafish and the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA). This funding is designed to support voluntary and refresher safety training for fishermen and the Scottish Maritime Academy based in Peterhead are now encouraging crew and skippers in the north east to take advantage of the fully funded courses on offer.
Centre manager of the Academy Linda Hope says, “This is positive news for everybody involved in the industry as it supports fishermen to undertake training and to develop knowledge and skills that helps to promote working safely at sea. Funded courses range from the 12 week deck officer courses through to short radio and navigation courses and the one day programme of Seafish safety courses. I would encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch as soon as possible to take advantage of this funding whilst it is available.”
Funding is available to fishermen who have worked on a UK-registered fishing vessel for at least 60 days within the last 2 years and who have completed all the required basic safety training courses. Fishermen can also undertake funded refresher training if their existing certificates are over 3 years old.
Seafish Fishermen’s Training Manager, Kevin Franklin says, “We are delighted to receive this funding from EMFF and the MCA to support this important safety initiative. By providing funding to support and enhance fishermen’s training opportunities we hope they will take this opportunity to develop their safety skills and knowledge beyond the minimum legal requirements.”
The funded courses begin in December and run through to April 2017. Further information is available at www.smaritime.co.uk or by contacting the Academy directly on 01779 476204.
The Scottish Maritime Academy is located in the North east corner of Scotland, north of Aberdeen. Peterhead is easily reached by road. The nearest train station and international airport is in Aberdeen and a frequent bus service runs from the Scottish Maritime Academy.
