Captain John Forman, Peterhead Port Authority’s Harbour Master presented the certificates to the students alongside Peterhead Academy’s Head Teacher Shona Sellers.
Captain Forman said, "You have all received a very good grounding here at the Academy and you now have lots of options available. The qualifications you now have are recognised internationally – whether you choose to opt for a career in fishing or the commercial fleet or decide to take another route.
"The fishing industry has been through difficult times but it is now becoming more prosperous and over the past year we have seen record fish landings. There is now substantial investment taking place – at the port itself to deepen the harbor and in new vessels which have been ordered. Although the commercial side is going through a dip it will bounce back and there are plenty of career options if you choose to go to sea."
Head Teacher, Shona Sellers added," The school is delighted to work in partnership with the Maritime Academy to offer this opportunity to our pupils, allowing them to explore future options within an industry that is important to the area. A recent HMIe visit saw this partnership working as a good means of Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce and we hope that the Maritime Academy can offer this course again next year."
The Scottish Maritime Academy is located in the North east corner of Scotland, north of Aberdeen. Peterhead is easily reached by road. The nearest train station and international airport is in Aberdeen and a frequent bus service runs from the Scottish Maritime Academy.
