The Scottish Maritime Academy offers maritime training across the Merchant Navy and Fishing sectors. We offer courses for new entrants and for experienced seafarers who wish to refresh knowledge and/or progress to the next level. The Academy is an approved training provider for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency; Merchant Navy Training Board; Association of Marine Electronic and Radio Colleges; Royal Yacht Association and Seafish.
We are the nautical centre of excellence of North East Scotland College.
Accreditations
AMERC is a network of colleges, universities and private organisations providing courses and consultancies in marine radio and electronics. AMERC oversees the provision and delivery of courses leading to examinations for the GMDSS certificates issued by the UK Government. Once approved by the Association, centres in membership are authorised to provide courses in GMDSS operation and techniques. The Scottish Maritime Academy is a member of AMERC.
The International Association of Maritime Institutions is primarily an association of colleges and other organisations involved in providing education and training for personnel involved in the Merchant Navy, Towing and Fishing Industries, though its Members and Associate Members also serve the wider maritime industry and the offshore industry to varying degrees.
The MCA implements the government's maritime safety policy in the UK and works to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea. The MCA provides certification to seafarers working on UK registered vessels. The Scottish Maritime Academy is an approved MCA training provider.
The MNTB is the shipping industry's central body for promoting and developing sector specific education, training and skills. The MNTB provides education and training frameworks that will develop high quality British seafarers who are respected worldwide for their professionalism and skills. The Scottish Maritime Academy works closely with the MNTB.
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA), is the national body for all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising. Amongst its various activities the RYA provides professional qualifications and training courses, backed by the MCA and government. The Scottish Maritime Academy is approved to run a variety of RYA courses.
Seafish is an industry–funded organisation that supports all sectors of the seafood industry, including the development, delivery and certification of mandatory fishermen's safety training. The Scottish Maritime Academy is an approved Seafish training provider.
